Mountain-Con is an annual science-fiction convention celebration of fandom, organized by fans for fans on a non-profit level. Compared to the pro cons (those held specifically to gain money and not much else), Mountain-Con recognizes all forms of participation: roleplaying games, reading books or comics, acquiring and displaying various collectibles, animé and cosplay, writing/reading/collecting fanfic, performing community service, enjoying tv and movies, live-action role-playing, collecting autographs and meeting celebrity guests, collectible card game tournaments, creating fan films, joining fan clubs, filking and other music, assembling to wear costumes or compete in masquerade contests, traditional wargaming and miniatures, creating fanzines and websites–and the list goes on and on.

If you want to share your fandom, let Mountain-Con know and we'll help you promote it.

Mountain-Con holds its event every September in or around Salt Lake City, Utah, with attendees coming from all over the intermountain west as well as from both coasts and every place in between. Guests have included actors, authors, artists--anyone who has contributed to fandom in its many forms.

The convention committee (concom) holds meetings on the first Saturday of each month at the Centerville Library from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.--or later, usually followed by a stop at a nearby restaurant. These meetings are open to all interested fans, group leaders, and volunteers as well as the Mountain-Con voting committee members and trustees.

Mountain-Con's concom comprises elected volunteers who constitute the voting committee. This committee, headed by the convention chair, handles the day-to-day operations of Mountain-Con. The concom includes the treasurer, programming chair, ops officer, guest liaison, publicity chair, security chief, registration director, volunteer coordinator, dealers' room coordinator, and more.

Mountain-Con trustees are the guardians of the convention and participate in voting committee decisions. They hold an annual board meeting to confirm the con chair and authorize the go-ahead for future Mountain-Con events. A minimum of three trustees is required via the con's by-laws and the state of Utah.

Q. What is Mountain-Con?

A. Mountain-Con is a annual celebration of fandom held in the form of a convention. It is held each September after fans requested that we replace the discontinued Starcon and defunct Slanted Fedora. Starcon was one of the annual conventions held by Starland in Denver.

Q. Who is the FanConCom?

A. The FanConCom is the convention organizing committee "Con-Com" for Mountain-Con. The FanConCom is fan-run and non-profit. With the number of other "Con-Coms" in the area, we elected to call ourselves the FanConCom in order to avoid any type of confusion.

Q. Is Mountain-Con a Media Convention?

A. Mountain-Con has media elements, but is not limited to just a "media convention." We pride ourselves on being a multi-interest event. Mountain-Con will have some media guests along with authors, artists, musicians, and more. As Mountain-Con grows, there will be more elements of gaming, anime, writing, comics, costuming, music, art, and other fandom interests.

Q. Is Mountain-Con an autograph show?

A. No. There are more events than just autograph collecting at Mountain-Con. Some of our guests offer to sell autographs instead of charging us a speaking fee. Since there is no speaking fee, we can keep the convention membership price low for the average convention attendee.

Q. Why are other conventions with actors so expensive?

A. As fans, we just don't know. One of our goals is to keep the convention within a reasonable price range of the average fan. Not all of us can spend hundreds (or more) to travel to Las Vegas or California.

Q. What is your affiliation with other convention organizers?

A. None. We are a group of independent fans, relying on the talents, skills, and support of the local fandom. We are currently unaffiliated with any outside convention organizers, but are always open to options. We have a working relationships with other fan-run conventions such as Conduit, Life, The Universe and Everything, and Fandemonium. There is also a working relationship with Starland, a professional company. We, along with these other entities, promote future science fiction conventions.

Q. Who can join the FanConCom?

A. We welcome anyone with interests supporting science fiction, fantasy, anime, etc., and who share the dream of building a multi-interest science fiction convention.

Q. When and where do the members of the FanConCom meet?

A. The FanConCom meets on the First Saturday of each month at the Centerville Library. Meetings start at 11:00am and run until 2:00pm. Afterwards several members stop at a nearby restaurant to get a bite to eat. Please contact information if you have any questions.

Q. I can't make it to FanConCom meetings; how else can I still help?

A. At the very least, buy a membership and attend the next Mountain-Con. Other options include volunteering for an at-the-convention position (guide (general volunteer), game master, panelist, etc.). While at the convention pick up an autograph or an item in the dealers room. Let your friends know about the fun you had at Mountain-Con. If you are part of a group, encourage them to hold a room party at Mountain-Con to promote themselves (more room nights sold helps to keep our costs down). As conventions cost money to put on, monetary donations (via the donate button or mail) are always welcome. Feel free to contact us if you need any suggestions or would like to offer any.

Q. What's a Guide?

A. A guide is a general volunteer-- sort of a mix of simple security functions and what's called a gopher at other conventions. They go-fer this and they go-fer that and do basic running around to help with convention business (getting items for the guests, delivering messages, etc).

Q. What happens at a room party?

A. A room party is an excellent way for different clubs and organizations to promote themselves. Some clubs are looking for new members, others want to help promote a certain aspect of fandom, while additional parties are there to help promote a "con-bid" effort. The various groups will post an announcement with the details of their room party (when and where) with the majority of the parties happening after the primary convention programing has concluded for the day. The FanConCom may not control the room party, but a room party helps sell more room nights for the convention. Additional room nights sold at the Mountain-Con rate help lower operating costs for the convention (thus keeping down the cost of admission). If you would like to host a room party, the hotel has agreed to let us block the room parties in the same area. Kekkaishi
Sumimura Yoshimori, a 14 year-old junior high school boy, is a descendant of Kekkaishi, or an exterminator of monsters He is vying for the heir to the family with Yumikura Tokine. Tokine is older than him, and she is his childhood friend as well as his rival Kekkaishi. To save people from the crises, and to make himself stronger, Yoshimori fights against monsters tonight, too.

Honey and Clover (TV)
Takemoto Yuuta, Mayama Takumi, and Morita Shinobu are college students who share the small apartment. Even though they live in poverty, the three of them are able to obtain pleasure through small things in life. The story follows these characters' life stories as poor college students, as well as their love lives when a short but talented 18 year old girl called Hanamoto Hagumi appears.

 

Buso Renkin (TV)
One night, Kazuki Muto jumps in to try to save what he thinks is a girl in distress from a monster and instead gets impaled through the heart. The girl, Tokiko, is actually an alchemic warrior with a Busou Renkin, name of Valkerie Skirt, with the mission to exterminate Homunculi. She implants the only other successful work of alchemy than the Homunculus, the Kakugane, to take the place of Kazuki's heart. The Kakugane resonates with his fighting spirit and forms a Busou Renkin (in his case a spear) so he can fight the Homunculus monsters who prey on humans. Kazuki joins with Tokiko to battle with the Homunculi and protect his friends and his sister Mahiro.

 

Seto no Hanayome (TV)
A young boy gets saved from drowning by a mermaid but, according to mermaid law, if a human sees a mermaid's true form, both have to be killed. The only solution to the problem is for him to marry her. But can they keep her secret from being found out.

Naruto Shippu-den (movie)
Demons that once almost destroyed the world, are revived by someone. To prevent the world from being destroyed, the demon has to be sealed and the only one who can do it is the shrine maiden Shion from the country of demons, who has two powers; one is sealing demons and the other is predicting the deaths of humans. This time Naruto's mission is to guard Shion, but she predicts Naruto's death. The only way to escape it, is to get away from Shion, which would leave her unguarded, then the demon, whose only goal is to kill Shion will do so, thus meaning the end of the world. Naruto decides to challenge this "prediction of death."

 

Vampire Knight (TV)

Yuki's earliest memory is of a stormy night in winter, wherein she was attacked by a vampire... And then rescued by another. Now 10 years later, Yuki Cross, the adopted daughter of the headmaster of Cross Academy, has grown up and become a guardian of the vampire race, protecting her savior, Kaname, from discovery as he leads a group of vampires at the elite boarding school. But also at her side is Zero Kiryu, a childhood friend who=s hatred for the creatures that destroyed everything he held dear, is now determined never to trust them. This coexisting arrangement seems all well and good, but have the vampires truly renounced their murderous ways, or is there a darker truth behind their actions. Thus begins the story of a warrior named Jil who, finding companions along the way, embarks on a quest for the fabled Blue Crystal Rod, a powerful artifact rumored to be in the highest floor of Druaga. However, other competitors, including the kingdom of Uruk itself, want the treasure, all for their own reasons.

Hayate the Combat Butler (TV)
Abandoned by his parents and given a monumentally large debt as a Christmas present, 16‑year old Ayasaki Hayate is at the lowest point of his life. Desperately trying alter his hapless fate, he decides to kidnap someone to hold for a ransom. Due to an ill choice of words, the girl he tries to kidnap misunderstands the action as a confession of love. His plan is totally crushed when he gives his real name out. Realizing his wrongdoing, Hayate proceeds to rescue the girl from the yakuza, who had instead kidnapped her. The girl, as a token of thanks, offers Hayate a job as her butler. Hayate, overwhelmed by her kindness, vows to protect her even at the cost of his life.
16 year-old Hayate is really down on his luck. His unemployed parents are good-for-nothings who waste the money they have on gambling. One day, his parents have racked up a huge gambling debt that they had to sell Hayate to the yakuza for the value of his organs. In a desperate attempt to avoid that fate, Hayate decides to become a Abad guy@ and kidnap someone to be held for ransom, but his efforts to do so are mistaken as a confession of love by the girl he targets.

During a battle with a Space Monster, Lal'C gets the surprise of her life when she sees Nono use her super-strength to help Dix-Neuf destroy the alien. From that point, Nono hangs along with Lal'C in hopes of becoming a member of Topless.

 

Kujibiki Unbalance (TV)
Once a year prestigious Rikkyouin High School has a lottery to determine the next year's Student Council membership. On their first day of school Chihiro Enomoto wins the presidency while his childhood friend Tokino Akiyama picks the vice-president's ticket. There is one catch though, they must first pass a one year apprenticeship under the current Student Council and any failure to perform the tasks assigned, however minor, will result in immediate expulsion from the school.

 

Spice and Wolf (TV)
Craft Lawrence, a 25 year old peddler travelling from town to town selling and buying various things to make a living during a period much like Europe in the Middle Ages. One night when stopped at the town of Pasroe, he finds in his wagon a 250 year old pagan wolf deity girl named Holo. She appears to be that of a 15 year old girl, except for a wolf tail and ears. She introduces herself as the town's goddess of harvest who has kept it blessed with good harvests of wheat for many years. Despite having the responsibility to watch over the town, she wants to go back to her homeland in the north called Yoitsu, she believes the people have already forsaken her anyway and that she has kept her promise to maintain the good harvests. She manages to bargain her way out of the village by making a deal with Lawrence to take her with him. As they travel, her wisdom helps increase his profits, but at the same time, her true nature draws unwanted attention from the church.

 

5 Centimeters Per Second (movie)
A tale of two people, Tono Takaki and Shinohara Akari, who were close friends but gradually grow farther and farther apart as time moves on. They become separated because of their families yet continue to exchange contact in the form of letters. Yet as time continues to trudge on, their contact with one another begins to cease. Years pass and the rift between them grows ever larger. However, Takaki remembers the times they have shared together, but as life continues to unfold for him, he wonders if he would be given the chance to meet Akari again as the tale embarks on Takaki's realization of the world and people around him.
